What we focus on

Why this industry is different

For a local business, the whole game is being found at the moment someone nearby needs you, and being trusted enough that they call rather than scroll to the next result.

In Detail

Marketing for local business, in practice.

What works in this sector, what the constraints are, and what we would prioritise first.

Start with the free thing that appears above the ads

For a business serving a specific area, the Google Business Profile is almost always the highest-return work available. It appears above both paid and organic results, it costs nothing, and most competitors have completed about half of it.

Complete every field, choose the most specific primary category available, add real photographs monthly, keep hours accurate including holidays, and post once or twice a week. That is an afternoon of work and it outperforms most paid campaigns a local business could run.

Reviews, and the pattern that matters

Reviews drive local prominence more than anything else you can influence, and recency counts as much as volume. Fifteen reviews from the last six months carries more weight than fifty from three years ago.

The system is simple: ask every satisfied customer at the moment they are satisfied, make it one tap with a QR code or short link, and reply to every review. Never buy them, never incentivise, and never ask only the customers you expect to rate you well.

Why you still need a website

The Google listing brings someone to a decision point. The website is where they check whether you are credible before calling. It also gives you a channel no platform can change the rules on.

It does not need to be elaborate. It needs to load fast on a phone, say what you do and where, list each service on its own page, and make contacting you a single tap.

WhatsApp and response speed

Most local businesses lose enquiries to delay rather than to competition. Someone messages on a Saturday evening, hears nothing until Monday, and has already called someone else.

Make the WhatsApp route obvious on every page and in your Google listing, pre-fill a sensible message so nobody has to compose one, and answer during business hours. An automatic acknowledgement outside hours costs nothing and holds the enquiry.

Advertising on a small budget

Local advertising is unusually affordable because you are bidding within a small radius rather than against national advertisers. A tightly targeted campaign can produce steady enquiries on a modest monthly budget.

Do the free work first, though. Running ads while your Google listing is incomplete is paying for traffic that will check the listing and hesitate.

Competing with larger brands nearby

Their advantage is budget. Yours is proximity, flexibility, response speed, and knowing customers by name. Most local businesses have all of these and communicate none of them.

Content that shows actual work, actual customers with permission, and the people who do the job outperforms anything polished. It does not need production. Real and regular beats produced and rare.

Pamphlets, hoardings, and local print

For many catchments, particularly outside metros, local print still reaches people your digital campaigns do not. Newspaper insertions in the relevant edition, door-drop pamphlets, and signage in feeder areas all work.

Add a QR code or a dedicated number so you can tell whether it returned anything, rather than repeating it every year out of habit.

Measuring without complexity

Local businesses do not need attribution modelling. Call volume, WhatsApp enquiries, direction requests from Google, and asking new customers how they found you gives a reliable picture.

Track those four monthly. If they are rising and your spend is not, something is working.
